We frequently visit Ramapo County Reservation. It’s a great green space in the midst of densely populated suburbia, has plenty of well-maintained trails and it’s dog friendly. Scroll down for the link to my previous post about this park.
We were late getting there to celebrate the arrival of spring this year because Lily had been sick in April and required surgery. Finally, by Memorial Day Weekend, everyone was healthy enough to get out to the park.
We crossed the bridge past the turtle bog and headed straight to the section of the Yellow Vista Loop Trail that heads towards the park’s waterfall.
In May, there was still a decent amount of water flowing. By late summer, it slows to a trickle.
After resting at the falls, we headed back to the car, satisfied with a short hike for this day. Little did we know that this would be Monkey’s last hike. She fell ill and died only three weeks after these photos were taken.

Glad you had one last hike with Monkey. Looks like a pretty place!
Thanks! Me too!
Looks like a nice area to hike & a gorgeous picture of Monkey!
Thanks! She was a photogenic girl
Rampo County Falls looks like a perfect place to walk. Very sorry to hear that it was your dog’s last adventure.
Thanks so much! At least she was happy until the end
Another beautiful park. So sorry about your Monkey. Amazing physical similarities between your Monkey and our Chloe, the Colorado Traveling Dog with our Traveling Ducks. Monkey looks happy to be out with you. Good memories.
Thanks so much! She was happy, right up until the end and that is a comfort
Rest in Peace, lovely Monkey.
Thanks so much.
Sorry to hear about your dog. I hope that things are well with you.
Thanks so much. We recently rescued a Catahoula because our Lily was not enjoying being an only dog. It’s been an adjustment, but keeps us too busy to dwell on our sorrow.
You are welcome so much.
Looks like a great place to walk in peace.
It’s very popular, so not exactly peaceful, but it is a great place to hike with dogs.
Lovely hike and scenery. So sorry for the loss of your dog. Those are tough losses.
Thanks so much
I’m sure this was a bittersweet post for you to write and share. What a sweet-looking dog. Sorry for your loss.
Thanks it was, but it was comforting to find these pictures in my camera and realize she was happy and carefree almost until the end.
A wonderful post on a place to breath among the crowds. Interesting to view the geology of Ramapo waterfall, via the video, quite different from the Finger Lakes falls.
Condolences of the passing of Monkey.
Thank you
Thanks! Yes I think the Ramapo Mountains are rich in iron, since there were a few iron works in the area dating back to colonial times.
In the south, bog iron was big in the pine barrens in colonial times. Batso Village in the Warton State forest is such a site.
Yes, I’ve posted about Batsto before. It was also up north…if you look at the Ringwood Manor posts…that estate also sprang out of nearby iron works
I’m sorry to hear about Monkey. 🙁 My thoughts are with you.
Thanks so much
You’re welcome!
So sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a pet is a sorrowful affair, requiring
Requiring time to heal.
Thank you 🙏🏻
I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. My heart breaks for you.
Thanks 🙏🏻
One of my favorite spots:)
Did you hear about the coyote attack there last week? The park just reopened.
Oh my gosh – yes!! I was so disappointed last week as I usually take a weekend hike there. Had to scramble to find a new place since it’s so close to me. Glad it’s reopened though:)
