Wai’oli Mission District: Hui’ia Church NRHP

IMG_5364

Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T!

Protestant missionaries arrived on the North Shore of Kauai in 1834 and built a simple wood frame church in 1841 to replace an earlier temporary structure.

Eventually, the church became the school building and missionary hall. The green Hui’ia Church was built nearby in 1912, incorporating the original mission bell in its steeple.

The missionary hall is now a museum and the church, which suffered damage in the floods of 2018, is once again open for services on Sundays
