The National Park Service has run a Park History Program since 1931. One of the Park History sections is the Maritime Heritage Program which seeks to document and protect nationally significant maritime resources. The Ninini Point Lighthouse is on that list.
Kauai had no natural harbor, so Nawiliwili Bay was dredged to open up the island to shipping. To accomodate the increased traffic, the first lighthouse was built on the northern entrance to the bay in 1897.
The current concrete tower was built on the point in 1932. It was shelled by the Japanese and reopened after WWII. Its beacon was automated in 1953 and in 1984, the lantern room and Fresnel lens were removed.
We were greeted by this little lighthouse as our cruise sip sailed into Nawiliwili and waved goodbye to it the next day as we sailed away.
