Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

IMG_5524

Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T!

The historic Hanapepe Swinging bridge was built in 1911 as a means for pedestrians to cross the Hanapepe River. It is a suspension bridge and was restored with reinforced steel cables after Hurricane Iniki damaged the original bridge in 1992.

We stopped here after visiting Waimea Canyon. After browsing some of the shops in the quaint town, we found the entrance to the bridge behind the Aloha Spice Company. It creaks and sways as you cross it, but the bridge is sturdy enough for up to 15 people.
