2019 Lighthouse Challenge of NJ»

The Lighthouse Challenge of NJ celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. I visited about half of the participating sites, focusing on the ones I didn’t see in 2018.

After climbing to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse, I decided to walk some of the surrounding trails in Cape May Point State Park. The park has three trails: Red, Yellow and Blue.

Cape May is a prime birding spot, on the southbound Fall migratory path. The Red Trail is a half-mile boardwalk trail with a few observation platforms. I saw many birds along this trail and frogs and butterflies too.

From the red trail, I took the 1.5 mile yellow trail. This trail starts out as a boardwalk and becomes a dirt path through a maritime forest.

After the path emerged onto the beach, I passed by the remains of a WWII bunker. The area was the Cape May Military Reservation during World Wars I and II, with several gun batteries installed as part of the Harbor Defenses of the Delaware.
