Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T!

2019 Lighthouse Challenge of NJ»

The Lighthouse Challenge of NJ celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. I visited about half of the participating sites, focusing on the ones I didn’t see in 2018.

After spending some time in Cape May, I headed north to the Tatham Lifesaving Station in Stone Harbor. This site is unique in that it is both a historic Coast Guard outpost as well as an American Legion Post with a military museum on the second floor.

The Life Saving Station dates back to the 1800s when shipwrecks were common and rescuers needed to be close to the shore to save the seamen. There are some displays on the grounds and on the first floor about the maritime history.

After the station was deactivated, the American Legion took over the building and has a display of artifacts from both World Wars on the second floor. I was unnerved by the Nazi flag on display here, so I didn’t linger after climbing the tower to see the view of Seven Mile Island.
