Cornish Windsor Bridge

Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T!

New England Road Trip 2024➤

My friend Patty and I hit the road again in October 2024. Our route took us through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and upstate New York. Along the way we hit several National Park Service Units and historic sites. On our way to Saint-Gaudens, we passed over the Cornish Windsor Bridge.

Longest Span➤

We saw the small parking lot on the New Hampshire side of the river and pulled in. From here we had a good view of the bridge. We read the markers, took some pictures and then moved on.

The Cornish–Windsor Covered Bridge spans the Connecticut River between Cornish, New Hampshire, and Windsor, Vermont. Built in 1866, the wooden bridge uses a lattice truss system patented by Ithiel Town. It stretches 449 feet, making it the longest wooden covered bridge in the U.S. open to vehicle traffic.

This is the fourth bridge at the site, replacing earlier versions from 1796, 1824, and 1828. Bela Jenks Fletcher and James Frederick Tasker built the current span for $9,000. The bridge operated as a toll bridge until 1943, with pedestrians once paying more to return to temperance-minded Windsor.

In 1970, the bridge earned landmark status from the American Society of Civil Engineers. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. A major restoration in 1988 helped preserve its historic character.
