DC Trip 2024

Our congressman came through with tickets to visit the White House in October of 2024. So my husband and I took a long weekend to visit Washington, DC. He hadn’t been to many of the sites, so we spent a few days visiting the various National Park Service units. We toured several memorials, monuments and other sites, including the Supreme Court.

The next stop in our busy day was the Supreme Court. With limited time before our Capitol tour, we focused on the highlights. After taking photos of the grand marble exterior, we joined a short line to enter the building. Once inside, we picked up the Supreme Court Highlights brochure to guide our self-tour through this symbol of the judicial branch.

The brochure led us through the main hallways lined with busts of past Chief Justices and into the Great Hall, where massive marble columns frame the entrance to the courtroom itself. We admired the craftsmanship of the building—completed in 1935 under Chief Justice William Howard Taft’s vision to give the Court its own home.

Although we didn’t have time to attend a lecture or courtroom session, our quick visit offered a glimpse into the history and tradition that shape the Supreme Court’s role in American democracy. From the sculpted bronze doors to the quiet dignity of the courtroom entrance, the experience was both brief and memorable.
