Ocean World

Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T!

Crescent City

The headquarters for Redwood National Park is in Crescent City, California While in the area, we also visited Ocean World. We stopped here after kayaking the Smith River because we needed a less strenuous activity.

Ocean World opened in 1964 as Undersea Gardens. Back then, it was a barge in Crescent City Harbor with a glass viewing area below decks. Today it is a more traditional aquarium with tanks housing indigenous sea life. The tanks are lit only by sunlight, so visiting hours are variable with natural light conditions.

We took the 45 minute guided tour through the displays which include a tide pool touch tank and shark petting area. There is no general admission here….the tour is the only way to see Ocean World. We liked seeing the aquarium this way. It felt more interactive. And less crowded.

The tour culminated with a sea lion show in a small outdoor theater. The resident sea lions are rescues from the local waters. The star of the show had survived a shark attack years before and had outlived her normal life expectancy.
