Lake Placid Olympic Center»

Lake Placid, New York hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980. While staying in the area, we visited as many of the Olympic sites as possible. The Olympic Center is the sports complex that hosted the skating and hockey Olympic events and is the site of the Lake Placid Olympic Museum.

The Museum opened in 1994 and in 2005, received the Olympic Cup from the International Olympic Committee in recognition of its contribution to Olympic Heritage. It showcases memorabilia such as the 1932 bobsled, Olympic relay torches and uniforms from the 1980 US hockey team.

The arena is notable for it’s 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice.’ The US men’s hockey team, comprised of young and inexperienced amateurs, went up against the favored, 5-time gold medal Soviet team and won. The US advanced to the final round to beat Finland for the gold. This Cold War-upset is the story behind the 2004 Disney film, Miracle, and the Lake Placid Museum provided some of the props for the movie.
