Crescent City➤
The headquarters for Redwood National Park is in Crescent City, California. While in the area, we also visited the Battery Point Lighthouse. This light is only accessible at low tide. It is continuously staffed by a different couple in residence each month.
We walked across the sandbar at the morning’s low tide. We waited a bit to get in as the lightkeepers can only take 8 people at a time. They have the tour organized so that one group enters as the previous group moves to the next room of the tour.
Well worth the suggested donation of $3 per adult, the tour lasts about 45 minutes, culminating with a visit to the tower.
Battery Point Light was one of the first lighthouses on the California coast and dates back to the 1850s. Back then, travel to the region over land wasn’t feasible, so the local economy relied on vessel traffic and the navigational aids that provided safe passage.
The keeper’s quarters are still furnished with pieces from the period and historical artifacts. We learned that the light survived a Tsunami in 1964. The big wave hit Crescent City following an earthquake in Alaska.
