Rainbow Falls is near Ausable Chasm which is within the boundaries of Adirondack State Park. Adirondack Park was created in 1892 to stop the clear-cutting of the state’s forests (and keep NYC’s water supply flowing) and is the country’s largest State Park at six million acres. We took a day trip to the area from Lake Placid to explore Ausable Chasm and admired these falls on our way into the park.
Rainbow Falls can be viewed from the Route 9 bridge over the Ausable River. They were once called Adgate’s Falls after an early settler, then Birmingham Falls and finally Rainbow Falls in 1877. It’s a few falls spilling into the same pool and they are the most photographed waterfalls in the Adirondacks.
