Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T! Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of the New York Diocese. The Gothic Revival-style cathedral was dedicated in 1879. From the Top of the Rock, you can clearly see the cross-shaped floor plan in the style of the great European cathedrals.
St. Patrick’s is perhaps the most famous Catholic Church in the US. It is on the busiest section of 5th Avenue, across the street from Rockefeller Center. The cathedral boasts 94 stained glass windows, which were not completed until the 1940s.
The Cathedral has two organs. The one over the 5th Avenue entrance was dedicated in 1930 and cost $250,000
The bronze doors at the main entrance are sculpted with figures of saints who are significant to this church. They were added to the cathedral in 1949. Each door weighs 9200 pounds.
