Mount Roberts: Tongass National Forest

Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T!

Mount Roberts

The Juneau Ranger District of Tongass National Forest surrounds Alaska’s capitol city, including Mount Roberts. Mount Roberts rises 3819 feet over the Gastineau Channel. The Goldbelt Tram departs from the cruise docks in Juneau and ferries passengers to the 1800 foot level.

Goldbelt Inc is a Native Alaskan corporation formed by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. They run the Tram and produced the film shown at the top in the Mountain House. Seeing Daylight runs for 18 minutes and highlights Tlingit history and culture.

We rode the tram up to the top upon arrival in Juneau. It’s one of the most vertical tramways in the world. We couldn’t walk any of the trails because they were still covered with snow and ice. In warmer months there are several choices for hiking through the rainforest.

We watched the movie, took in the views and then headed back down for our next adventure.
