Hawk’s Nest: Upper Delaware S&R River

Welcome back to National Parks and other public lands with T!

Upper Delaware

Hawk’s Nest Mountain sits at the southern end of the Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River. The National Park Service manages this stretch of the Delaware from Hancock to Sparrowbush, NY under the Wild and Scenic River System. The park runs for 73 miles. The Upper Delaware rates as recreational, rather than wild, since the park has some means to control the flow of the water.

Hawk’s Nest

The winding highway at Hawk’s Nest sits 300 feet above the Delaware River. The road began as a one-lane dirt road between towns in 1859. New York State paved the road in the 1930s and dedicated it as part of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway in 2002.

You can park at one of several pullouts along the twisty road for breathtaking views of the river. Sportscar manufacturers have featured the road in commercials, like this Porsche ad from 1989. The movie Dr Strange filmed a portion of the pivotal car crash here.
