The Ottauquechee River winds its way through Woodstock Vermont. After visiting the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock, we needed to find dog-friendly outdoor dining because a. coronavirus and b. Trudy and Lily are generally not welcome inside restaurants no matter how good they promise to be. We found the perfect lunch spot in the White Cottage, a cute burger and shake place established in 1957 on the outskirts of Woodstock.
While I ordered the food, my husband snagged a picnic table below the restaurant on the banks of the Ottauquechee River. The Ottauquechee River is a tributary of the Connecticut River, which eventually finds its way to the Long Island Sound.
In 2011, Hurricane Irene sent the Ottauquechee roiling far above its banks. She swept away homes, historic covered bridges and businesses. The White Cottage sits high above the river and was still completely gutted. Looking at the fairly low water levels as we ate, it was hard to imagine that. Fortunately, the owners were able to make repairs in time to open for the next summer season in 2012.

Lovely photo’s of one of my favorite local rivers. My wife and I volunteer at the Marsh Billings Rockefeller NHP nearby. We often direct visitors to those same picnic tables or the Farmer’s Market next door. You didn’t specifically mention it here, but the nearby National Park is one of the few in the US to allow (leashed) dogs to enjoy the park trails. Stewart
Yes, I posted about our trip to the park previously. We took a short vacation with our dogs last summer…so many dog friendly places up there! You’ll be seeing more posts from the area for a while…I took lots of pics 🙂
